Gemini vs ChatGPT: Which AI Chat Has More Active Users?

Gemini vs ChatGPT: Which AI Chat Has More Active Users?

Sundar Pichai announced on August 11 that the Gemini app crossed the 1 billion monthly active users milestone. According to Pichai, this marks the fastest growth of any product in Google’s history, making Gemini the company’s 14th service to reach this threshold, joining Search, Gmail, Android, and YouTube.

According to the company, 63% of users employ the app’s voice features, with over 150 million images generated daily, and more than 100 million active users accessing it through iOS. ChatGPT crossed the same 1 billion user milestone earlier, in June.

Does this mean Gemini has surpassed ChatGPT?

No. Both services currently have approximately the same number of monthly active users, and Google itself frames this as reaching ChatGPT’s level rather than surpassing it. Which service truly leads depends on metrics that neither company fully discloses, including daily active usage, time spent in the app, and revenue from paid subscriptions.

Why user numbers are difficult to compare in the first place

Google counts users of the standalone Gemini app, while some model features are embedded directly in Search, Gmail, and Android without separate tracking. OpenAI, meanwhile, counts ChatGPT users across all access platforms. Direct comparison of these figures therefore provides only an approximate picture.
